MOTS-c — Mitochondrial-Derived Peptide for Metabolic Reprogramming Research
MOTS-c is a 16-amino acid mitochondrial-encoded peptide discovered by Lee et al. at USC (Cell Metabolism, 2015). One of the first mitochondrial-derived peptides (MDPs) with systemic signaling, representing a novel class of retrograde signaling molecules.
Mechanism of Action
MOTS-c translocates to the nucleus under metabolic stress, regulating AMPK-dependent transcription. It inhibits the folate-methionine cycle through AICAR accumulation, mimicking caloric restriction. Circulating levels decline with age, correlating with metabolic dysfunction.
