SS-31 — Cardiolipin-Targeting Peptide for Mitochondrial Medicine Research
SS-31 (Elamipretide) is a cell-permeable mitochondria-targeted tetrapeptide by Szeto & Schiller. Selectively concentrates in inner mitochondrial membrane binding cardiolipin. First-in-class compound for stabilizing mitochondrial bioenergetics (Antioxidants & Redox Signaling, 2014).
Mechanism of Action
SS-31 binds cardiolipin, stabilizing cytochrome c interactions and optimizing electron transfer through complexes III/IV. Reduces electron leak and superoxide while maintaining ATP synthesis. PNAS showed reversal of age-related mitochondrial dysfunction and cristae remodeling.
