DSIP — Delta Sleep-Inducing Peptide for Neuroendocrine Research
DSIP (Delta Sleep-Inducing Peptide) is a 9-amino acid neuropeptide first isolated from rabbit cerebral venous blood during slow-wave sleep (Schoenenberger & Monnier, 1977). Functions as a broad-spectrum neuromodulator affecting sleep architecture, stress response, HPA axis regulation, and circadian rhythm modulation.
Mechanism of Action
DSIP crosses the blood-brain barrier and interacts with GABAergic, serotonergic, and glutamatergic systems. It modulates cortisol and ACTH secretion, suppresses stress-induced corticotropin release, and influences endogenous opioid systems. Its sleep effects appear mediated through delta (0.5-4 Hz) EEG power enhancement.
Key Research Areas
- Sleep Architecture: Selectively enhances slow-wave (delta) sleep without affecting REM duration — targeted tool for non-REM sleep research.
- HPA Axis Modulation: Attenuates stress-induced ACTH and cortisol release, normalizing dysregulated corticosterone rhythms.
- Circadian Rhythm Biology: Exhibits circadian variation in CSF concentration; investigated for synchronizing peripheral clocks and melatonin patterns.
- Neuropeptide Interactions: Explored for interactions with endogenous opioid system, LHRH secretion, and somatostatin release.
