Melanotan II (MT-II) is a synthetic cyclic heptapeptide α-MSH analog designed by Hruby & Hadley at University of Arizona. Non-selective melanocortin receptor agonist (MC1R, MC3R, MC4R, MC5R) for pigmentation, energy homeostasis, and behavioral research.
Mechanism of Action
MT-II activates melanocortin receptors via Gs-cAMP signaling. At MC1R: cAMP-PKA-MITF-tyrosinase cascade for eumelanin synthesis. At MC4R: anorexigenic pathways and sexual arousal circuits. Induces melanogenesis independent of UV (Peptides, 1996). MC4R effects led to bremelanotide (PT-141) development.
